Tales from the Kingdom of Tundo is a mythic fantasy story set in a fictional Kingdom of Tundo. It is based on the storytelling style of the Arabian Nights and The Sandman comic books of Neil Gaiman. It follows many fantastical stories with the main character, Bunao Dula, who is either a witness to the telling, a shadow who helps the sub-protagonist of the story, or the lead character of a particular story.
The first book is an introduction of our hero, Bunao Dula (fictional). He is given a monomyth atypical of the standard hero trope. In his story arc, Bunao has an inner battle with himself, and the main villain is introduced much to our hero’s surprise. It is also about family relationships, how greed destroys relationships and how the lust for power turns people into monsters. It is also the story of a hero connected to a magical land where gods once walked and where mythic creatures roam freely. There is also the tale of a tikbalang named Onrak. Hers is a saga of wandering and perseverance, of finding hope in a time where hope is nowhere to be found. Bunao is in the story, but only to act as the protagonist’s guide for the story is Onrak’s alone.
“The story will remind you of things you never thought you understood, and it will feed your soul well, especially if you are a Filipino in these confusing, globalized times.”
– Alma Anonas Carpio (Business Mirror & Philippines Graphic) July 28, 2019
“The story is brought to life by vivid, textured black and white illustrations, reminiscent of the organic twists and whorls of nature. Themes of loss, perseverance, faith, forgiveness, and especially embracing change and identity make it so much more relevant in modern times.”
