THE NBDB TRANSLATION SUBSIDY PROGRAM 

The National Book Development Board of the Philippines (NBDB) offers translation grants to Filipino Authors and Publishers who wish to translate and publish their books to other Filipino and international languages.

In order to increase readership among Filipinos, there is an immediate need to provide mother-tongue publications available to all audiences. To enhance global competitiveness and increase the Filipino diasporic cultural footprint around the world, there is also a need to translate Filipino publications to other languages. The NBDB will support this through two programs – the National Translation Subsidy Program and the International Subsidy Program.

 

NATIONAL TRANSLATION SUBSIDY PROGRAM

The National Book Development Board of the Philippines (NBDB) offers translation grants to Filipino Authors and Publishers who wish to translate their books to other Filipino languages.

The National Book Development Board of the Philippines (NBDB) will subsidize for the translation, design/redesign of book, five (5) copies of international standard print. The publisher will be responsible from concept, approval of translations and design to publication.

OUTPUT: The publisher will be responsible for translation, design, production, retail pricing of the book. At least five (5) international standard print copies will be provided to the National Book Development Board along with associated trade collateral such as pricing and marketing materials.

Children’s Literature

1. Available grant amount per book: PHP 50,000.00. Total available grant: PHP 1,000,000.00
2. No. of grants available: 20
3. A publisher can apply for up to four (4) books per grant cycle
4. Subject Matter: Origin Stories, Culture, Identity, Values, Cross Cultural Interaction, Local History, Mythology and Folklore
5. Priority Languages: Filipino/English to Ilocano, Cebuano, Waray, Hiligaynon, Meranaw, Tausug, Kiniray-a (although other languages are accepted)

Graphic Literature

1. Available grant amount per book: PHP 100,000.00. Total available grant: PHP 600,000.00
2. No. of grants available: 6
3. A publisher can apply for up to two (2) books per grant cycle
4. Subject Matter: Local History, Mythology and Folklore, Identity, Modern Heritage
5. Priority Languages: Filipino/English to Ilocano, Cebuano, Waray, Hiligaynon, Meranaw, Tausug, Kiniray-a (although other languages are accepted)

Classics / Creative Fiction / Non-Fiction / Historical /Cultural

1. Available grant amount per book: PHP 150,000.00. Total available grant: PHP 900,000.00
2. No. of grants available: 6
3. A publisher can apply for up to two (2) books per grant cycle
4. Subject Matter: Prehistory, Precolonial History, Local History, Mythology and Folklore, Identity, Decolonization
5. Priority Languages: Filipino/English to Ilocano, Cebuano, Waray, Hiligaynon, Meranaw, Tausug, Kiniray-a (although other languages are accepted)

TOTAL GRANT FOR 2nd QUARTER CYCLE: PHP 2,500,000.00

 

INTERNATIONAL TRANSLATION SUBSIDY PROGRAM

The National Book Development Board of the Philippines (NBDB) offers translation grants to Philippine publishers who wish to sell their rights internationally.

The National Book Development Board of the Philippines (NBDB) will subsidize for the translation, design/redesign of book, five (5) copies of international standard print.

OUTPUT: The publisher will be responsible for translation, design, production, retail pricing of the book. At least five (5) international standard print copies will be provided to the National Book Development Board along with associated trade collateral such as pricing and marketing materials.

Culinary Literature and Cook Books

1. Available grant amount per book: PHP 100,000.00. Total available grant: PHP 800,000.00

4. Subject Matter: Filipino Cuisine, Filipino Food, Filipino Fusion, Filipino Culinary Literature
5. Priority Languages: Filipino, Philippine Languages, or English to German / Spanish / French / Arabic / Japanese / Chinese

1. Available grant amount per book: PHP 120,000.00. Total available grant: PHP 960,000.00

GRANT PROCESS

Who may apply?

All Philippine publishers including non-profit organizations, educational institutions, and government agencies with publication and/or press division.

Eligibility

1. NBDB Registered Philippine Publishers, Authors, Creatives (If you are not registered, please visit booksphilippines.gov.ph to register online for FREE)
2. A publisher must have an active backlist of at least 20 titles.
3. For enterprises applying, book publishing must be the company’s primary trade. 
4. A publisher must have plans to print the book
5. A publisher must have effective distribution network and marketing and promotional plans for the chosen work.
6. The chosen work must be published in the Philippines and written in any of the country’s languages (Filipino, English, and other Philippine languages).
7. The book must have at least 48 printed pages except Children’s fiction

Applications are due 30 May 2021. Results will be announced on 30 June 2021.

Evaluation

The entries will be screened by the NBDB. Applications will be evaluated according to the chosen book’s artistic merit, the publisher’s and translator’s reputations, and the quality of the marketing and promotional plans.

Results and Processing

Grant results will be announced one month after the application deadline. Successful grant recipients will be notified by email.

For successful applicants, the NBDB will give a Letter of Offer with the Terms and Conditions and performance measures of the grant. Notified applicants have one week to accept the offer by signing the response slip. Failure to send the reply slip within two weeks will forfeit the grant.

The translated book must be published and delivered to National Book Development Board on or before December 15, 2021.

Grant Payment

The translation grant is paid in three installments:
● 30% upon signing of the agreement
● 40% upon submission of translated manuscript
● 30% upon delivery of five (5) copies of the printed book.
